Navigating College as a Parent

By Staci Holzheimer

Earning a college degree is a challenge in and of itself, but for college students raising children while being a student is an added responsibility. Time management as a student parent can be difficult, but with careful communication and a few sacrifices, attending college as a parent is extremely feasible.

Before you go back to school, sit down with your family and talk about why you want to earn your degree and how it could benefit your family as a whole. Involve your kids in your education as much as possible, taking them to college sporting events or asking them to help you study with flashcards. Master the art of multi-tasking and learn to become a student on-the-go. Take your laptop or smartphone with you when you go pick up your kids, so you can write papers or read assignments while you wait for your child to finish dance class or basketball practice.

If you can’t find a friend or family member to watch your kids while you attend class, many colleges and universities provide an on-campus child care center for their students. These centers tend to be much more affordable than other child care options, such as in-home daycares.
